During this tour you will visit the main Cathedral and then Qorikancha before taking a bus up to the sites overlooking the City, Saqsaywaman which contains some of the largest stones used in any Inka construction, Q’enqo a funerary center, Pucapucara which was a fort, and Tambomachay which is known as the Inca baths. Day 3 – Today you will be picked up from your accommodation at 5:30 am and be transported to the small village of Taucca (3750m) where you will start your trek. The first part of the trek is on fairly level terrain, and the landscape will be that of typical Andean valleys rich in corn, potatoes, barley, quinoa and other Andean tubers. As you gradually ascend towards your pass at 4,300m, the landscape begins to change dramatically to that of high Andean savannah or Puna, with scant vegetation consisting mainly of “ichu” or high altitude grass, and the views of the Cordillera Vilcabamba peaks are spectacular: Veronica, Pitusiray, Chicon and San Juan. Soon after the pass you will start your descent toward the Huchuy Qosqo plains hiking along a path that leads to the Ccauca ravine, where you will be able to see archaeological remains and wild crops, such as tarwi, and a large number of cacti. You will continue downhill towards the Leon Punku ravine, where you will find remains of an Inca bridge and trail, this canyon is full of majestic rocks and boulders that direct the river to Huchuy Qosqo at 3650 m. Huchuy Qosqo (“Little Cuzco”) is a noteworthy Inca complex, it boasts very fine stonework in a large Kallanka (rectangular Hall), some residential and defensive quarters, and interesting two-story buildings in stone and adobe. Huchuy Qosqo is located on a plateau, surrounded by Inca agricultural terracing and commanding superb views of the Vilcabamba range. After our visit we will continue downhill to Lamay at 2900m where we’ll catch our bus that will transport us to Ollantaytambo, here we will board the train that will take us to Aguas Calientes where we will have dinner and spend the night.
